The Worst Review I Ever Received and Why I Loved It

I absolutely hated it. It was the worst book I ever read.”

I happened to stop by a friend’s store and she mentioned she had loaned my book, Gifts of the Storm, to her friend.

“I loved the book and thought she would too,” my friend told me. “I was so surprised when she told me she hated the book.”

“Did she say why she hated it?” I asked.

“Yes, she hated it because the main character Maureen got everything in life my friend has always wanted,” she said. “My friend told me she cried through the whole book.”

When I heard the reasoning behind her review of my book, I knew that this was the best review I could ever get.

As an author, I try to write books that will touch my readers. When this woman said the character had everything she’d always wanted and never got, I knew there was a yearning within this woman. By reading my book, she’d been able to touch this yearning and recognize it.

The character in Gifts of the Storm she refers to is Maureen.  In the beginning of the book, Maureen has everything on the surface. She has a wealthy husband, a beautiful daughter and a barn full of beautiful horses.  When her husband leaves her for another woman, Maureen feels like her world is falling apart. Through the book, Maureen finds love in a new direction and with it comes a large family who is very accepting of her and shows her how to be part of the family that she’s never had.

“She told me her husband’s family has never accepted her and puts her down all the time,” said my friend.  “When she read about Maureen experiencing a beautiful and accepting family, it made her sad because she has never had that.”

Our emotions are part of what makes us human.  Our emotions are meant to be experienced and not to be held or stuck inside.  I knew this woman had been feeling this sadness for a long time and was allowing it to become stuck inside herself.  She was not able to find a way to express her sadness.  By reading my book and having the book be a mirror for her, she was finally able to realize what she’s been holding for so long. Hopefully this realization will help her find a way to change your life and manifest what she has always yearned for.

Has a book ever touched you in an intimate way?  I’d love to hear about it.

Today’s Healing Word – Walk

The end of winter is near.  After a season of going inside, it is time to begin to awaken your spirit to new possibilities. It is time to walk.

During the season of cold, we tend to bundle up or stay indoors.  It is a time of rest and dreaming in the old way.  The days are cloudy and dark, the perfect time for quiet reflection on our lives and what we want to dream into being during the next cycle.

As spring approaches, it is time to shed our layers and open ourselves to the new light.  We cast off our heavy clothes, and with them, we cast off our heavy burdens.  We stand a bit taller and feel the freedom of leaving behind what is no longer needed.

Now is a great time to begin your new walk.  Literally, you can go out into nature and walk, listening to the messages of the returning birds, seeing small buds and new shoots emerging.  Feel inside for what is wanting to be awakened in you.  What are you wanting to bring forth in this new time?  What dream are you wanting to manifest?

Are you ready to walk with freedom and creativity?

Today’s Healing Word – Ignite

Like moths, we are drawn to fire.

Ignite a campfire and people will come.  We are drawn to flame for the warmth it provides, and also for the beauty.   The colors of the rainbow can be found in a campfire.

We depend on fire to cook our food and heat our homes.  Nature depends on fire to renew the landscape and allow new seeds to open.  Fire has a way of cleansing and opening possibilities.

We also depend on the fire of our spirit which keeps us alive.  The fire inside of us keeps our bodies warm and our spirit bright.  When you allow your ignited spirit to shine, people are drawn to you.

Like any fire, there is a balance to be found between burning brightly and burning out.  When you feel your fire burning out, ignite it again with creativity and magic. Connecting with other people’s spirit fire will help keep your own ignited.

How will you ignite your spirit fire today?

Today’s Healing Word – Breath

Are you taking your breath for granted?

You do it all day.  As long as you are alive, you are breathing.  For most people, breathing is an unconscious action.  Your body is programmed to breathe. You don’t have to think about breathing to do it.

What happens when you think about your breath?  You can begin to realize the active state of your breathing and the effect it has on each moment.  Are you holding your breath?  Are your breaths shallow and constricted or are they deep and free?

Almost anything you do in life will be easier and more powerful when you are conscious of how you are breathing.  Your breath can calm you.  Your breath can increase your physical power.  Your breath can channel your emotional power.  Coming into relationship with your breath brings you into conscious relationship with all life.

What is your breath teaching you today?

Today’s Healing Word – Dirt

Dirt is not a four letter word.

Can you hear your mother’s voice? “Don’t get your clothes all dirty.” As a child, were you taught that dirt was a four letter word?  It’s time to rethink what you may have learned about dirt.

Dirt is your home.  Dirt is the Mother Earth in all her glory.  Dirt is the structure you walk on every day. Dirt grows your food.  Your house is built on dirt.  When you die, you will turn back into dirt.

Celebrate dirt.   Roll around in your garden.  Garden in your bare feet.  When you allow the dirt to absorb the energy of you, your garden will put exactly what you need into the food you grow there. Smell the dirt, taste it, and love it.  Dirt is your friend.  You can talk to dirt, telling it all your secrets.

Dirt is everywhere.  We cannot live without it, it is what we are made of.

What will you do to reacquaint yourself with dirt today?

Today’s Healing Word – Encouraging

Encouraging love helps others find their way on their sacred path.

To encourage is to inspire with courage.  When you use encouraging love, you are inspiring others to find their inner courage and follow their dreams.

Each of us is here with a dream to accomplish in our life.  Fulfilling your dream may mean finding gifts behind the obstacles in your path.   When you shy away from the obstacles presented, you are not proceeding with courage.

Having someone to guide you with encouraging love can help you see the beauty in each occurrence of life.  Being able to provide that encouraging love to the other allows you to share your dream with the world.

Who will you encourage today?

Today’s Healing Word – Compassionate

Compassionate love stems from seeing the true connection of your spirit self.

Compassionate love is not pity for the other.  Feeling pity for another requires seeing the other in their suffering as less than.  Seeing someone else as less than requires you to see yourself as more than.  It becomes easy to separate yourself from the one you see suffering.

Compassionate love comes from your deep connection to your own spirit.  From this deep connection, you see the other’s deep spirit self.  With this opening to spirit, you can feel compassion for the one who has lost connection with their true spirit self.

Compassionate love helps the other reconnect to their true spirit self.  Compassionate love is uplifting and unifying.

Can you feel compassionate love for yourself in times of challenge?

Today’s Healing Word – Plan

What is your plan for sustaining your dream of life?

Do you have a dream?  Do you have a strategy for how you will share your gifts with the world?  What plans have you made to fulfill your heart’s desire?

Being alive in your spirit, open to change and seeking balance is a good energetic way to begin to fulfill your sacred dreams.  And, dreams only take you so far.  At some point, you need to move into action to make those dreams become reality.

Your successful plan will recognize all your available resources, how to access them and how to make them work in harmony with guidance from your heart. Now, find the warrior in yourself who is able to stick with the plan and move forward with right action.

What is your plan for today?  Does it bring you a step closer to fulfilling your dreams?

Today’s Healing Word – Seven

How do we build a sustainable world for the next seven generations?

In earth wisdom traditions, thinking ahead to the next seven generations is a way to ensure sustainability of life.  Any action that is not positive for the next seven generations is not undertaken.

Thinking ahead to seven generations is a way to gauge the sustainability of your present actions.  Would those in the seventh generation see your actions as respectful?  Would they see how what you did helped sustain life for themselves as well as the seven generations to follow?

By holding awareness of the generations to come, you also leave a legacy of respect for your children to follow.  In this way, your legacy of respect can be sustainable in it’s own right.

Looking back seven generations, what did your ancestors do to help your life be sustainable?

Today’s Healing Word – Change

Sustainability is healthy when it is open to change.

Sustainability is not a fixed state.  Refusing to change under the guise of sustainability does not bring balance to your world.  Harboring a fear of change can chain you to an outdated image of sustainability.

There are many things in our society that are revered because of their age.  Because it is old does not automatically mean it holds value or should be sustained.  Doing something because “it has always been done that way” leads to atrophy.

Being open to change allows a state of sustainability which is vibrant and relevant in the present moment.

What are you holding on to that gets in the way of present sustainability? What fears can you release about change?
