The Worst Review I Ever Received and Why I Loved It

I absolutely hated it. It was the worst book I ever read.”

I happened to stop by a friend’s store and she mentioned she had loaned my book, Gifts of the Storm, to her friend.

“I loved the book and thought she would too,” my friend told me. “I was so surprised when she told me she hated the book.”

“Did she say why she hated it?” I asked.

“Yes, she hated it because the main character Maureen got everything in life my friend has always wanted,” she said. “My friend told me she cried through the whole book.”

When I heard the reasoning behind her review of my book, I knew that this was the best review I could ever get.

As an author, I try to write books that will touch my readers. When this woman said the character had everything she’d always wanted and never got, I knew there was a yearning within this woman. By reading my book, she’d been able to touch this yearning and recognize it.

The character in Gifts of the Storm she refers to is Maureen.  In the beginning of the book, Maureen has everything on the surface. She has a wealthy husband, a beautiful daughter and a barn full of beautiful horses.  When her husband leaves her for another woman, Maureen feels like her world is falling apart. Through the book, Maureen finds love in a new direction and with it comes a large family who is very accepting of her and shows her how to be part of the family that she’s never had.

“She told me her husband’s family has never accepted her and puts her down all the time,” said my friend.  “When she read about Maureen experiencing a beautiful and accepting family, it made her sad because she has never had that.”

Our emotions are part of what makes us human.  Our emotions are meant to be experienced and not to be held or stuck inside.  I knew this woman had been feeling this sadness for a long time and was allowing it to become stuck inside herself.  She was not able to find a way to express her sadness.  By reading my book and having the book be a mirror for her, she was finally able to realize what she’s been holding for so long. Hopefully this realization will help her find a way to change your life and manifest what she has always yearned for.

Has a book ever touched you in an intimate way?  I’d love to hear about it.

Today’s Healing Word – Stand

Which boundary would you defend with your life?

When your boundaries allow for flexibility and movement, you are able to transform rigid structures that can harm life.  Our world is not static and our boundaries must allow for transformation of old beliefs and structures.

And, there are times when a boundary needs to be defended.   Sometimes taking a stand is needed to defend the integrity of all life.   What would our boundaries look like if no law could be passed that would harm the children?

Which of your boundaries are flexible and which are needed to defend life?  What do you stand for?

Today’s Healing Word – Boundary

When we feel the need to protect our territories, we establish boundaries around them and around ourselves.

How solid are the boundaries you have built around your territories?  Are your physical boundaries made of steel, wood, paper or some other material?  What substance are your emotional boundaries made of?

Boundaries can delineate a path, protect a precious commodity, or separate us from life.  Setting realistic and healthy boundaries is necessary to maintain our vitality.  When we use those same boundaries to exclude ourselves or others, we can suck the vitality out of our lives.

Boundaries built out of fear can become so strong that they begin to feed our fears and divide us from the experience of community which can help us break down our fears.

Which of your boundaries are built of fear?  Who will you let inside your boundaries today?

Today’s Healing Word – Vitality

Your body’s vitality comes from balancing your energies.

Your physical form is created in beauty.  Finding tranquility in the stillness of your body reveals the passion within.  Your interconnected body sings a song of abundance and vitality.

This vitality is your spirit light animating your physical form. Staying balanced with these energies allows you to guard the vitality of your movement.  Your body is the temple where your spirit resides in this life.  It is up to you to keep this temple clean and bright so your spirit can accomplish your sacred dream of life.

Love your body.  Move your body.  Dance, sing, and create magic within the marriage of spirit and form.

Are you moving with vitality?  What will you do today to transform the vitality of your body and allow your spirit light to shine through?

Today’s Healing Word – Timing

The key to effective communication is…wait for it…timing.

A good storyteller knows how to use timing to create energy in the story.  Pauses, slow words, or fast sentences create different moods for the listener.  Good timing keeps the listener attentive and anticipating the next shift.

You may ‘have them at hello’, but without good timing, you won’t have them until the goodbye. Your great story can lose it’s punch if you give away the ending in the middle.

Being aware of the cycles in conversation means being attentive to your listener. The timing of your words can either help or harm your message.  Do you talk too fast or too slow?  Do you try to manipulate the communication by talking over the other?  Is your listener ready to hear your message?

What message is the world ready to hear from you?  How can you deliver your message with accurate timing and be heard?

Today’s Healing Word – Circle

When you feel the need for healing, look for places where the circles in your life have become distorted.

When I look in nature, it is very hard to find anything forming itself in squares.  The squares I see around me are made by humans. When humans want to contain or build boundaries, we tend to think in squares. Property lines, buildings, boxes and fences are examples of squares.

Nature builds itself in circles.  Our earth is a circle which moves in a circle, around a circle. Trees, plants, even our bodies are created in circles.  Time moves in circles. When we want a structure to move and flow, we create in circles.  The square that is a car cannot move without the circle of the wheel.

When we sit as a people in ceremony, we sit in a circle.  Circles are balanced and inclusive.  All points on a circle are equal.  Energy moves and flows in the circle.  When you sit in a circle, you can see everyone.  No one’s back is turned to you in a circle.

When you feel the need for healing, find the places in your life where your energy has been trapped in corners.  Reshape your circle and allow your energy to flow freely.

Can you find anything in nature, not man made, that is created in a square?  If so, please share in the comments section.

What squares in your life keep you trapped?  Are there places where your circles have become less than round?

Today’s Healing Word – Traction

In order to make progress in life, you need traction under your wheels.

I love watching a Mud Run, where trucks run through a bog of mud in an attempt to get the fastest time.  Some drivers seem to slide through the bog, weaving in all directions.  They have little control over their truck as the mud takes over, causing them to run into the banks or even flip over.  I saw one driver who generated so much speed that he was unable to stop at the end of the track and ran his truck into the woods. The drivers who win are the ones who can generate impulsion through the mud and maintain traction to steer their truck in the right direction.

Where do you find the traction to steer through the mud of life?  You can close your eyes and allow challenge to take you for a ride, slipping and sliding in all directions, or you can remain present and use your heart-centered yearning to keep you on your sacred path in life. Your ability to maintain awareness and use your inner strength gives you the traction required to stay on course.

Life doesn’t have to be a mud run.  You aren’t being scored on how fast you can run through your life.  Unlike the mud run, slow and steady can mean success.  When speed is needed, being able to access your inner wisdom and use your resources well will allow you to achieve your goals.

Are you slipping and sliding through life?  What is needed to bring back your traction and keep you on your path?

Today’s Healing Word – Inspire

A triumph, a successful journey, a sunrise or a hug, all amazing happenings begin with inspiration.

Before you can accomplish any goal in your life, you must have the inspiration to begin, to continue and to complete the journey.  An inspired journey is filled with joy and accomplishment.

At its core, inspire means to breathe in.  The simple act of breathing in the energy available to you in nature can clear your mind and arouse the creative impulses within you.

Are you filled with ideas but never seem to bring them to fruition?  Perhaps you are lacking the inspiration, the breath of life, to begin.  Are you breathing?  Many people spend their lives hunched over, breathing shallow.  An oxygen restricted brain cannot function at an inspiring level.  Stand tall, open your chest and breathe in the life-giving force all around you.

When you find and follow your inspiration, you can become an inspiration to others.  Do you know someone who could use some inspiration?  Breathe and allow your light to shine through to them.

What are you inspired to begin today?  How will you use your breath in a new way? Who will you inspire?

Do you have a word you would like to explore the healing in?  Add your words by leaving a reply.

Today’s Healing Word – Energy

When we feel an energy that is not life-affirming, whether it is a physical energy such as  stiffness or pain, or an emotional energy like sadness or anger, healing requires a shift of the energy.

Our world is made of energy.  To heal means to change the energy from non-life-affirming to life-affirming.

In our healthy selves, energy flows freely.  Our bodies move with grace and ease while our emotions are flexible.  When you feel the ease of your body’s movement is restricted, your body is asking for healing. When you become stuck in an emotion, your subconscious is asking for healing.

You are able to shift your energy by becoming aware of what needs healing and accessing a command state over your energy system.  Many times, the first step of becoming aware of the need to shift is the most important.

Some physical shifts require help.  Broken bones heal faster when they are tended to.  You may also require help in becoming aware of what emotional energy is stuck in your body.

Think of a small child who can transform from a raging tantrum to peeling laughter in a matter of seconds.  As we grow, we may lose the awareness that we have the same capability. All that is needed is awareness, intention, and integrity within the self.

What energy will you shift today?
