The Worst Review I Ever Received and Why I Loved It

I absolutely hated it. It was the worst book I ever read.”

I happened to stop by a friend’s store and she mentioned she had loaned my book, Gifts of the Storm, to her friend.

“I loved the book and thought she would too,” my friend told me. “I was so surprised when she told me she hated the book.”

“Did she say why she hated it?” I asked.

“Yes, she hated it because the main character Maureen got everything in life my friend has always wanted,” she said. “My friend told me she cried through the whole book.”

When I heard the reasoning behind her review of my book, I knew that this was the best review I could ever get.

As an author, I try to write books that will touch my readers. When this woman said the character had everything she’d always wanted and never got, I knew there was a yearning within this woman. By reading my book, she’d been able to touch this yearning and recognize it.

The character in Gifts of the Storm she refers to is Maureen.  In the beginning of the book, Maureen has everything on the surface. She has a wealthy husband, a beautiful daughter and a barn full of beautiful horses.  When her husband leaves her for another woman, Maureen feels like her world is falling apart. Through the book, Maureen finds love in a new direction and with it comes a large family who is very accepting of her and shows her how to be part of the family that she’s never had.

“She told me her husband’s family has never accepted her and puts her down all the time,” said my friend.  “When she read about Maureen experiencing a beautiful and accepting family, it made her sad because she has never had that.”

Our emotions are part of what makes us human.  Our emotions are meant to be experienced and not to be held or stuck inside.  I knew this woman had been feeling this sadness for a long time and was allowing it to become stuck inside herself.  She was not able to find a way to express her sadness.  By reading my book and having the book be a mirror for her, she was finally able to realize what she’s been holding for so long. Hopefully this realization will help her find a way to change your life and manifest what she has always yearned for.

Has a book ever touched you in an intimate way?  I’d love to hear about it.

Today’s Healing Word – Water

When your emotions are able to move like water, and you allow yourself to feel, experience and release your emotional power, you can find peace within the self.

I have heard artists say the hardest thing to paint is water.  Water is not a static thing.  It is filled with dynamic movement.  It flows, shifts, changes, sparkles, cascades, drips and reflects.  Trying to capture the spirit of water on a two dimensional surface can be a challenging task.

Your emotions are like water.  They are meant to flow, shift, change, sparkle, cascade, drip and reflect.  And like water, when they are restricted, they become a powerful force. And like water, trying to capture the spirit of emotions in words can be a challenging task. One list I saw had over 4,000 words to describe emotions.

How are your emotions flowing today?

Today’s Healing Word – Healing

Art is healing; healing is art.

The most powerful art is created when the artist releases pain, sadness or injury into the canvas.  Finding expression for these emotions allows the artist to revisit them and find what needs to be released.

Experiencing a work of art created through such a release can often lead the audience to discovering the emotion trapped within the self.  We allow the artist’s release to spur ourselves to healing old wounds.

The process of healing is an art within itself.  Looking at the self and finding the wounds within is the first step to healing.  Once discovered, we can find our own release and move forward with more joy and success in life.

The artist is the embodiment of the creative spirit and uses the artistic medium to hold the infinite healing energy of expression.

What within you is looking for healing?  How can you express this emotion through creative art?

Today’s Healing Word – Emotion

The artist channels the power of emotions into works of art.

The artist releases these emotions through the process of creation. Joy, love, fear or anger, giving voice to the emotions through art can be a clearing process for the artist.  Expressing these emotions keeps the artist clear of block and open to unlimited creativity.

By giving voice to these emotions through art, the artist identifies these emotions for others and allows us all to share in the true expression.  Seeing a vibrant landscape can bring joy to the viewer.  Hearing the pain behind a song can release similar blocked emotions in the listener.

Diversity is the lifeblood of artistic expression.  When the artist captures the diversity of life, he shares this perspective with the audience.  No two works are exactly the same.  The audience is enriched through the experience of becoming aware of life’s many facets.

What form of art speaks to you?  How does your art reveal your diversity?

Today’s Healing Word – Alone

Even in the darkest hour, remember, you are never alone.

Life is coming at you from all sides and you feel so alone in this enormous universe.  When you feel alone, look inside to see where you are separating yourself from others.  The root to alone is all-one. We are all one.  You are me.  I am you.  We are all a piece of the Great Spirit.  We are connected even when we are physically or emotionally by ourselves.

You are only alone when you separate yourself.  With 7.06 billion humans on this single planet, there is always someone to reach out to.

When you see everyone as part of you and yourself as part of everyone, you begin to realize the connectedness we all share.  When we see others as different, or less than ourselves, even better than ourselves, we begin to separate from our common spirit.

You are never alone when you see the humanity in all and reach out to embrace others.

Who will you touch today?

Today’s Healing Word – Drama

Peace can be found within the drama of your life.

Life is full of drama.  When you are stuck in your own dramas, the world will mirror your emotions back to you.  Your troubles and fears are played out in front of you every time you turn on a television or watch a movie.  They are highlighted in the books you read and played out in your neighbor’s back yard.

Emotions are not meant to be peanut butter.   Getting stuck in your emotions is like eating a peanut butter sandwich with nothing to wash it down.  It can drag on you and leave you without a moment of peace.

Emotions are like a flowing river, sometimes slow and serene and other times tumbling over rapids, but always moving.  Finding peace with the drama of your life is possible when you break the dams of emotion that are holding you back.  Cry like nobody is watching.  Laugh until you pee your pants.  Feel peace flowing back into the crevices where your emotions have been hiding.

What emotion needs to be expressed in you today?

Today’s Healing Word – Song

What song is your body singing?

How we walk, how we hold ourselves, how we sit, even how we hug tells a story.   It is a song of your ancestry and your experiences.  Each movement, each breath, sings the song of you through your body language.

Do you walk looking down?  Are your shoulder’s slumped?  Is there a spring in your step and a smile in your eyes? Each action your body takes sings the song of how you feel about yourself and your life.

You are able to choose the song your body is singing.  You can choose to sing a song of beauty and joy, or a song of depression and doubt.  Changing the song your body sings will change the song your heart is singing as well.

Stand tall, shoulders back comfortably, head held straight, and allow your subconscious mind to take in this new song.  I am important.  I am beautiful.  I stand for something.  Even if you have physical challenges, you can consciously tune your body language to a new frequency.

What is your body singing to you and to those you interact with?  Is it the message your heart wants to sing?  What will you do today to change the song of your body?

Today’s Healing Word – Passion

How you feel about your own body affects they way you feel about others.

Your body is an intricately woven creation.  From your fingertips to your toes, each piece of your body performs an amazing function.  Each cell in your body has it’s own intelligence and reason for being.  Each cell has a passion within its own being.

Do you approach your body with the same awe and wonder that you would approach any other magnificent creation?  Touch your chest and feel your heart beating.  Each beat is a miracle within itself.  Become passionate about each breath you take.

When you become passionate about your own body, you can begin to see the diversity in all bodies with a sense of adventure and appreciation.

Do you feel passionate about yourself?  Do you have a fascination about your body and what it is capable of achieving?

Today’s Healing Word – Tide

The waters ebb and flow with the tide, giving and taking, restoring and releasing.

I have always lived by some form of water, whether it was a small creek, a large river, or one of the Great Lakes.  When you live by water, you learn to understand the flowing nature of this earth element.  Waters rise and fall, change course, erode and build up their banks.  Waters are ever changing.

I had a friend who lived near a backwater of the Mississippi River.  His home was on a hillside, with a patch of level ground before dropping to the water’s edge.  The great Mississippi is famous for its flooding abilities, however this man had a great optimism about the water’s changing nature.

“When the river floods, I have waterfront property,” he said. “And when the river is low, I have an extra acre or two to play with.”

His optimism displayed his ability to ebb and flow with the waters.  It is a good metaphor for allowing your emotions to ebb and flow.  When flowing water is trapped, it will erode its banks in search of freedom.  When you allow your emotions to become trapped, they also will search for an outlet, or erode away at your structure.

How are your waters flowing?  Do your emotions overflow or has the riverbed within you run dry?  How will you celebrate the tides of your life today?

Today’s Healing Word – Grace

Flexibility, balance and strength in movement lead to true grace.

Graceful movement comes naturally when you have an open connection to the freedom of your spirit.  When you combine flexibillity, balance and strength with this open connection, you are free to express your true spirit light in your movement.

I saw a beautiful example of true grace while sitting in a square in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. A black car stopped in the square.and a tall woman stepped out of the car. She moved across the square with true grace.  Her head was held high, back extended, and her feet barely touched the ground.  I could not take my eyes off of her.  She was moving with freedom, flexibility, balance and heart-focused strength and it was a beautiful thing to see. I don’t remember her face or what she was wearing, only the way she moved.

When you bring the energy of flexibility, balance and strength to your emotional energy, you can experience grace in your thoughts and words. Even if you are facing physical challenges, you can still express true grace of spirit through your emotional presence.

May all your thoughts be graceful.  May all your words be graceful.  May all you actions be graceful today.
