Today’s Healing Word – Sniff

Spring is a great time to take a ‘sniff walk.’

A dog trainer once recommended I take my dog for sniff walks.  During sniff walks, there is no planned destination.  The dog is free to sniff at whatever he finds, for as long as he wants.  Random direction changes are welcome.  Time means nothing. The walk is over when the nose is satisfied.

It’s not only good advice for your dog; it’s good advice for you.  You don’t need to have a dog to take a sniff walk.  The same rules apply with or without a pet along.  There is no destination, or time.  You walk at your own pace, stopping whenever something interesting catches your nose, eyes, or ears.

The goal of the sniff walk is to be in the moment.  Stop and pick up a rock.  Examine every color and texture in the rock.  Sniff it, taste it.  Experience the smell of fresh pine, the feel of the breeze on your face.  If you only go to the end of your driveway and your senses feel satisfied, don’t worry about the mileage.  Your only goal is to experience with all your senses.

Enjoy your ‘sniff walk’.
